While perusing the highly aesthetic European cycling blog that is Copenhagen Cycle Chic, I came across a link to an article from the Washington Post on the resurgence of cycling among commuters in the US capital.
Aside from being impressed by the fact the House of Representatives has set up a fleet of communal Trek bikes ready for the use of its members, what I like about this piece is the emphasis it places on the great pleasure that cycling can bring to those who do it. The genuine enthusiasm of the cyclists interviewed in the article underlines the idea that urban cycling – be it to work, to the shops, or just for pleasure – really is something that anyone can do safely and happily on a day to day basis, even in a hitherto car-centric city like Washington DC.
It’s also impressive to read that there are not only proper bicycle parking facilities, but also bike parking attendants at the Washington Nationals’ baseball ground – something which would be very welcome at the major venues here. Croke Park, the new Lansdowne, and the various music and arts venues should take note.
